Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes and Troubleshooting

Is your Whirlpool dishwasher flashing lights or displaying an error code? Find out what it means and how to get your dishes clean again.

Whirlpool dishwashers typically communicate errors by flashing the "Clean" light or displaying a specific code on the digital screen. Understanding these codes is the first step to getting your dishwasher back in working order.

Common Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes

F7 E1 or Flashing Clean Light (7 flashes, pause, 1 flash)

Meaning: Heating element failure. The water is not reaching the required temperature. How to fix: This is a common issue that often requires replacing the heating element assembly. Ensure your home's hot water supply is turned on and reaching the dishwasher.

F8 E1 or Flashing Clean Light (8 flashes, pause, 1 flash)

Meaning: Slow fill or no water fill. How to fix: Check that the water supply valve under the sink is fully open. Inspect the water inlet valve screen for sediment buildup. If the valve is clear but water isn't entering, the inlet valve may need replacement.

F9 E1 or Flashing Clean Light (9 flashes, pause, 1 flash)

Meaning: Drain error. Water is not draining from the tub. How to fix: Check the filter at the bottom of the tub and clean out any food debris. Inspect the drain hose for kinks and ensure your sink's garbage disposal (if connected) isn't clogged. The "knockout plug" in a new disposal installation must be removed.

F6 E4 or Flashing Clean Light (6 flashes, pause, 4 flashes)

Meaning: Float switch error. The dishwasher thinks it is overfilling. How to fix: Check the overfill float assembly (usually a small plastic dome in the front corner of the tub) to ensure it moves up and down freely. Sometimes a stray piece of food can cause it to stick in the "up" position.

FE or Flashing Clean Light (Continuous)

Meaning: General control board or memory error. How to fix: Perform a hard reset by flipping the breaker for the dishwasher off for 5 minutes, then turning it back on.

When to Call a Technician

While cleaning a filter or freeing a stuck float is easy, replacing a heating element or inlet valve requires disassembling parts of the dishwasher. If your Whirlpool dishwasher is experiencing persistent errors, contact the professionals at Appliance Service Plus for expert repair across the GTA.
